G.A. Henty

For many years, Doug Phillips and Vision Forum have sold books by G.A. Henty and hosted an essay contest in his honor. You can see how often Henty is praised there.

One of the books included in the 40-volume set for sale at Vision Forum is By Sheer Pluck. Here is Henty’s opinion of black people, which any young child may find in its pages:

They are just like children. They are always either laughing or quarrelling. They are good-natured and passionate, indolent, but will work hard for a time; clever up to a certain point, densely stupid beyond. The intelligence of an average negro is about equal to that of a European child of ten years old. A few, a very few, go beyond this, but these are exceptions, just as Shakespeare was an exception to the ordinary intellect of an Englishman. They are fluent talkers, but their ideas are borrowed. They are absolutely without originality, absolutely without inventive power. Living among white men, their imitative facilities enable them to attain a considerable amount of civilisation. Left alone to their own devices they retrograde into a state little above their native savagery.

White superiority is the theme that runs through all of Henty’s books. He once wrote of “the utter incapacity of the Negro race to evolve, or even maintain, civilisation without the example and the curb of a white population.”

Note: Doug Phillips is selling the original, unexpurgated (racist) versions of these books, not the versions edited by Mantle Ministries and Preston Speed.

It’s astounding that racist books are being sold to impressionable youths under the guise of Christianity, but Henty is just the beginning. For example, Vision Forum also sells Elsie Dinsmore, which contains the “n-word” and borderline pederasty. Elsie even tells her slaves that “they wouldn’t be Negroes in heaven.”

Astounding? Given identity of some of Doug and Howard Phillip’s fans and constituents , this doesn’t surprise me a bit…

Anyway, this is a great little site you have here. May I link to it?

    • D.L F Says:

This is a good site. Thanks for taking the time to create it. I noticed that Vision Forum seemed to have connections with racists but I didn’t know anyone had gathered so much evidence. You’ve done a great job here.

  2. Elaine Says:

Yes, please do, and thank you for visiting!

I thought I had done my research, but somehow I missed the links you provided. What more needs to be said if the man has friends at Stormfront?

  3. Cynthia Gee Says:

Well, to be fair, Phillips may not have actively sought out their “friendship”, LOL. But it does speak volumes about his views when a group like Stormfront recommends his materials, and also recommends infiltrating Howard Phillips’ political party! Here are my thoughts on the matter….

  4. Karen Says:

I wish I could say I’m shocked. I’m not though. I’m no longer shocked by anything these patriarchy leaders like Doug Phillips come up with. It may not be real obvious to many people that Doug Phillips is a bigot and a racist. You have to look carefully, and that’s something that most Christians won’t do with a popular man like Doug Phillips.

The great irony in all of this is that it was Doug Phillips, through his proxy Matt Chancey, that got these accusations of “racism” going. But they’re the real racists! They started slinging their “racist” spit wads at the Epsteins. Imagine that! Calling someone with a name like “Epstein” a “racist.” Does it get any more Jewish than Epstein?

We were discussing this very thing over at Indelible Grace not long ago.

There also appears to be many connections between Patriarchy and racism.

As soon as we started talking about Doug Phillips being a racist and his great love for Robert L. Dabney, lo and behold a slavery defender showed up to tell us all about how wonderful slavery is! All Lynn had to do was mention the name Dabney and poof! Here come the slavery defenders!

Thanks for what you’re doing Elaine.

  5. Cynthia Gee Says:

There’s more…. Howard Phillip’s Constitution Party has close ties with the League of the South, another racist organization; in fact, the party’s recent Presidential cantidate was a LoS member. Reconstructionist “Pastor” Steve Wilkins is a founding member of the LoS.
Wilkins believes that lying is perfectly acceptable, if it advances the Reconstructionist cause. Deacon Kevin Branson posted an article on the web site of Wilkins’ church in which he praises Rahab as “a spiritual hero” because “she deceived the wicked who sought to kill God’s own people.”
Branson said that “some of us don’t have a clue about honorable and necessary deception of the wicked” and that “sometimes God requires that we offer by way of our right hand a sweeping sword, and from our lips deception, that the wicked might fail, and Christ and His Bride might flourish.”
    Check it out…

I’m totally disgusted after reading all this, but I thank you for sharing it with everyone who will find this site. Christians need to be aware of what’s happening in the world of Doug Phillips, Esquire. He has enormous influence over quite a few homeschooling families, and I’m sure most of them have no idea what he’s really about. I understand he has become quite rich doing his misogynistic, Confederate flag-waving patriarch routine.

Doug and his merry band of good ol’ boys have spent so much time studying all this hateful literature that they have no time for the Bible; otherwise they would have come across that bit about the last being first and the first being last.

  7. Fr John Says:

Isn’t it FASCINATING that you call your website ‘racist churches’ and then practice a reverse form of ‘racism’ against those that merely articulate what the ENTIRE WESTERN CULTURE believed, taught, and acted on for over 1900 years, yet YOU think YOU alone are “God’s frozen chosen.” Having seen the morass of racial bestiality that was NO after Katrina, witnessing the immigration debacle twice foisted on the American populace by a traitor senate, and now seeing your ‘concern’ over unexpurgated novels that are today corroborated by Scientific Research (Color of Crime, the “g” factor, the Bell Curve, ad infinitum) yet you folks (mostly smarmy ‘christian women’ in rebellion to male headship!) still hold to a ‘holier-than-thou’ mindset aginst those who are your betters. Truly, all they that hate Me, God says, love death. And Death of a civilization a race, a culture is just as much a death wish, than the most fervent sodomite or abortionist. You are of a piece with the godless culture around you. Anathema sit!

  8. sarah walston Says:

ROFLOL @ you all. This is the funniest – if not the most disturbing thread – I’ve seen you all participate in!

    This is just too much!

  9. Mr. DuFay Says:

Fr John, you couldn’t have said it better! And as far as calling everyone a racist just because we love our people is truly amazing to me. Do you think that the African-Americans and Latinos who love their people, culture, and heritage (as they should) are just as racist as you proclaim us to be? And I think that when you get right down to it, most of the fine, Godly men you call “racist” don’t hate other races, on the contrary, we simply love our own. In fact, the very people who decry the so called “racists” are the ones who want to eliminate all races through interracial marriage and forcing all cultures to assimilate, thereby destroying not only the Christian European foundation of this country, but also God’s created order and divisions.

  10. Headless Unicorn Guy Says:

Again, when were these books written?

From the attitude and use of the word “Pluck” in the title, I would guess late 19th Century to pre-World War One. In which case, the actual danger lies in (accidentally or intentionally) presenting such a period piece (with period attitudes) as contemporary.

  11. Mason G. Says:

Don’t pay attention to what “Fr. John” says. He frequently posts these outrageous comments on the website of an openly racist and anti-Semitic radio show called The Political Cesspool. “Fr. John” himself is also an avowed anti-Semite, and in the past has actually attacked the show’s host (James Edwards) for being too _soft_ on Jewish people.

I’m not going to post a link to their official website, but there _is_ a very detailed and well-sourced Wikipedia article about them, which I have contributed to.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Political_Cesspool

The Political Cesspool claims to be “Christian”. However, the show’s primary host maintains a blog on which he almost never talks about Jesus or the Bible; instead, his blog posts are almost always about how much he hates (black, Jewish, Arab, Hispanic) people, or about how (insert Confederate historical figure here) was so wonderful. Interestingly he doesn’t seem to bash Native Americans or Asians as often as he does other minorities, although he certainly isn’t particularly fond of these groups, either.

  12. Awakenedfinnean Says:

I’m sorry, after reading this I just had to lol. First some some woman says something to the fact of jews cant be racists…..ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND? Have you read the tahlmud? google tahlmud truth. Israel is a state built upon racisim. And since when does having pride in your heritage make you a racist. God made all of us who we are, no? The powers that be think they know better than God. They want us all to be brown people controlled by base endeavors and vices. Look deeper for your answers and quit drinking the kool aid. The only people who suffer under multiculturalism are whites. And yes the average US black person has an average IQ of 90. Fact. The truth is still truth even if its “racist”.
But I’ve wasted enough of my life, why don’t you move to Detroit if you love your diversity so much? Ya, didn’t think so.
    Give me a break people.

  13. Sara Says:

I find, these days, that most children and young adults of all races are good-natured (though rarely this) and passionate, indolent, but will work hard for a time (though also rarely); clever up to a certain point, densely stupid beyond. The intelligence of an average American HS student is about equal to a child of ten years old from the 1700 and 1800’s; Decidedly so in moral and common sense areas of intelligence. A few, a very few, go beyond this, but these are exceptions. They are fluent talkers, but their ideas are borrowed. They are absolutely without originality, absolutely without inventive power. Left alone to their own devices they retrograde into a state little above savagery.
I could compare American children to the Chinese or the a number of other races or people that have surpassed American youth in a number of areas. Does this make me a racist? No, it does not. It is my view on the state of ALL youth today and my own obsevation as to the present condition of ALL children. Does that mean to say that this has always been or will always be my view on (American) children? Not necessarily. This will very likely remain my view of those born between 1980 an ???? until this ceases to be the case by my observation of their improvement or further decline. Henty, in your example, was giving his observation of black children in a certain time and place. The writings of men like this helped a great deal in bringing to light the state of those children. In writing the things that now offend your poor little eyes, men and women like Henty could raise awareness of the problems affecting the opressed who had little or no voice of their own. People reading these books then came to the realization that these children had very little chance to be anything but slaves. This realization, because of men like Henty, lead to political movements and the correction of a great wrongs.

  14. Belinda Says:

These books are period books! We should not try to rewrite history. It would be odd to read a period book of the south and there be no slavory. These books have aloud our family to talk about the past and compare them to the Word of God. These books have never made me hate other racies but gave me a veiw at what people thought at that time. You can not hide from the past you veiw it with a christian word veiw. These books made me want to live more for Christ, but of course that was my hearts desire. What is your hearts desire. People are always looking for the negitive and miss the blessing. If you read a book about Hitler and he spoke negative about the Jewish people should you put the book down? The book is not the problem it is the people who want learn from the past and want to pretend all has been well. We are a fallen race of people and history tells it.

  15. Alan Says:

I agree with Belinda, these books are period books! The language and attitude is an indication of the times and instead of teaching racism contrasts the times. Mark Twain, Charles Darwin, and many other writers of the past would fail under your modern standards and scrutiny.

I love Mark Twain’s sharp whit when he was challenged by the content of Mark Twain (which of course uses the ‘N-‘ word many times)

“I am greatly troubled by what you say. I wrote ‘Tom Sawyer’ & ‘Huck Finn’ for adults exclusively, & it always distressed me when I find that boys and girls have been allowed access to them. The mind that becomes soiled in youth can never again be washed clean. I know this by my own experience, & to this day I cherish an unappeased bitterness against the unfaithful guardians of my young life, who not only permitted but compelled me to read an unexpurgated Bible through before I was 15 years old. None can do that and ever draw a clean sweet breath again on this side of the grave.”
