R.J. Rushdoony

R.J. Rushdoony concocted an ideology called Christian Reconstructionism which seeks to resurrect Old Testament law. National Public Radio calls Christian Reconstructionism “the most extreme form of Christian fundamentalism” and the “Christian Taliban.”

As was true of Dabney, Rushdoony argued that slavery is not only biblical and permissible but “benevolent” and preferable to living in Africa. He also condemned interracial marriage. (I just realized that I am writing these words on the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Loving v. Virginia decision which legalized interracial marriage.) Rushdoony detested the civil rights movement and desegregation.

Read these quotes from his book, The Institutes of Biblical Law:

The white man has behind him centuries of Christian culture and the discipline and the selective breeding this faith requires… The Negro is a product of a radically different past, and his [genetic] heredity has been governed by radically different considerations.

Unequal yoking plainly means mixed marriages between believers and unbelievers is clearly forbidden. But Deuteronomy 22:10 not only forbids unequal yoking by inference, and as a case law, but also unequal yoking generally. This means that an unequal marriage between believers or between unbelievers is wrong… The burden of the law is thus against inter-religious, inter-racial, and inter-cultural marriages, in that they normally go against the very community which marriage is designed to establish.

Hybridization seeks to improve on God’s work by attempting to gain the best qualities of two diverse things; there is no question that some hybrids do show certain advantageous qualities, but there is also no question that it comes at a price, bringing some serious disadvantages.

Every social order institutes its own program of separation or segregation… Segregation, separation, or quarantine, whichever name is used, is inescapable in any society.

He said Americans were blameless for taking slaves from Africa because those taken were already enslaved. He said those who were shipped to America preferred the journey to staying in Africa. He even called this journey to slave markets “the jackpot.” He wrote: “The move from Africa to America was a vast increase of freedom for the Negro, materially and spiritually as well as personally.” But he said the slaves never thought in terms of freedom, and that’s why Liberia never worked out. He called slavery “an albatross that hung the South, that bled it,” because the slaves were lazy. “Only a minority of the slaves ever worked.” He said white men were hired to do the hard work.

He also mocked the educational achievements of Africans: “The University of Timbuktu never existed. The only thing that existed in Timbuktu was a small mud hut the Arabs had where they taught a few of the half-breeds to memorize the Koran. They never even learned to read. But the people who are trying to exalt the Negro past have gone into that sort of thing and they’ve spoken of the school of Timbuktu, and then somebody quotes that, and it becomes a university, and then it becomes quite a tremendous cultural center. This is ridiculous.”

Though a pastor, he was not above using vile language. In Foundations of Social Order, he railed against those who identify “‘God’ with the city, with the ‘spick, black nigger, bastard, Buddhahead, and kike,’ with ‘all men,’ and calls for communion with all men as they are… This concept runs deeply through the so-called Civil Rights Revolution.”

He condemned “sensitivity training,” which he said was designed to teach that all people have equal rights, which is a denial of God’s law. He called labor laws “Marxist,” including the law that forbids discrimination by race. He asked: “Where in the Bible does it tell us that there is a principle of equality?… A belief in good and evil requires us to discriminate. An employer therefore has a property right to prefer whom he will, and he can prefer whom he will in terms of color, creed, race, or national origin.”

He praised eugenics: “Selective breeding in Christian countries has led to a degree to the progressive elimination of many defective persons.”

Rushdoony’s own son-in-law denounced him for abandoning covenantalism for racism and accused him of elevating “race over reformation.”

He said adopting welfare babies is “insanity in the name of Christ.”

He said the first-century church was segregated, “and Paul saw nothing wrong with that, nor did any other apostle.”

But that’s not the worst of it. According to the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, holocaust denial was the worst thing about Rushdoony.

The false witness born during World War II with respect to Germany is especially notable and revealing. The charge is repeatedly made that six million innocent Jews were slain by the Nazis, and the figure – and even larger figures – is now entrenched in the history books. Poncins, in summarizing the studies of the French Socialist, Paul Rassinier, himself a prisoner in Buchenwald, states: ‘Rassinier reached the conclusion that the number of Jews who died after deportation is approximately 1,200,000 and this figure, he tells us, has finally been accepted as valid by the Centre Mondial de Documentation Juive Contemporaine. Likewise he notes that Paul Hilberg, in his study of the same problem, reached a total of 896,292 victims. Very many of these people died of epidemics; many were executed’… Did the Nazis actually execute many thousands, tens, or hundred thousands of Jews? Men to whom such murders were nothing had to blow up the figure to millions. Did the doctor perform a number of experiments on living men and women? A few sterilized women and a few castrated men and their horrified tears and grief are not enough to stir the sick and jaded tastes of modern man: make him guilty of performing 17,000 such operations. The evils were all too real: even greater is the evil of bearing false witness concerning them, because that false witness will produce an even more vicious reality in the next upheaval. Men are now ‘reconciled’ to a world where millions are murdered, or are said to be murdered. What will be required in the way of action and propaganda next time?

In other words, insisting that 6 million Jews were killed by Nazis is worse than what the Nazis actually did!

Rushdoony called Zionism “national socialism,” i.e., Nazism. He said, “The Jews of Europe are not really Jewish in blood… There are no Jews with more than a trace of Jewish genes from antiquity.”

Well, what do you think Doug Phillips has to say about Dr. Rushdoony?

Phillips has praised Rushdoony as being one of the most significant influences in his life, perhaps second only to his father. Doug’s respect for Rushdoony is such that when he was in law school, he “would literally come to class with three books—the textbook, a copy of The Institutes of Biblical Law, and my Bible.”

Especially fond to me are the memories of old days when I could visit in person or listen on tape to Mr. [Otto] Scott and Dr. R.J. Rushdoony (now with the Lord) as they would wax eloquent on subjects as diverse as the moral inadequacies of jazz, to the glories of haggis, to an exposition on the book of Romans.” On page 61 of The Institutes of Biblical Law, Rushdoony writes: “The background of Negro culture is African and magic, and the purposes of magic are control and power… Voodoo or magic was the religion and life of American Negroes. Voodoo songs underlie jazz, and old voodoo, with its power goal, has been merely replaced with revolutionary voodoo [‘civil rights’], a modernized power drive.” The footnote on that page: “See, for the voodoo background of jazz, Robert Tallant, Voodoo in New Orleans (New York: Collier Books, 1946, 1965).”

On his blog, Doug wrote, “The influence of [Rushdoony] on twentieth century thought was vast and extended to many who drew heavily from his writings though they were unwilling to formally associate with him because of his vigorous advocacy of biblical law.” Gee, you think so? More than likely, it was due to his virulent racism and anti-Semitism, but those things are apparently no problem for Doug Phillips. That’s why Doug sells Rushdoony’s materials.

Doug Phillips considers R.J. Rushdoony to be one of the greatest men of the 20th century. Rushdoony was a very close friend of the Phillips family and was personally responsible for Howard Phillips’s conversion from Judaism.

I’m very disturbed to learn that Doug Phillips has so many close ties to so many racists. Doug has a very large following, especially among Christian home schoolers. I’m shocked by what I’ve read here and I don’t understand how Doug Phillips has managed to keep such obvious racist leanings a secret from so many.

Here’s an article I found about R.J. Rushdoony on The Holocaust.

    • Rob Says:

Your link to the Holocaust article is a bad link.

Your naivete in believing this false witness is alarming , neither Doug nor Rushdoony are racists.

  2. Silas Says:

“If it is ‘racist’ to prefer the company of people of one’s race, to prefer the culture created by one’s race, and to want one’s race to survive and flourish, then virtually everyone of every color is ‘racist,’ and the term has no useful meaning.”
    – Jared Taylor

    • Louis DeCaro Jr. Says:

Well, the fact that we’ve all been educated to think in racial categories as if they were absolutes of biology, perhaps you have a point. But how does that same person who prefers his own “race” treat people who are not of his race–will he hire him as an employee? Snub them if they come to his church? Get upset at another person who loves and cares for people who are not his “race”? I don’t think it’s possible to be as simple as preferring one’s own “race.” People who “prefer” their own race will often use their influence, power, and resources to sustain that pattern throughout their lives, communities, and society. That’s how individual prejudice expands into systemic “preference,” which looks a lot like racial discrimination in society at every turn. And “preferring” your own “race” is an option when your “race” represents the norm; it is considered “reverse-racism” coming from a minority group.

  3. Bob Calder Says:

Silas, It is racist to think other humans to be inferior to one’s self. I have no idea who Jared Taylor is, but his statement makes no sense.

I could say “If Christianity means the inordinate loving of pickles, then Asians are indeed all Christian.”

If Rushdoony had read history and understood it, he might have appreciated being an American. Obviously he was afraid of things that were not happening that colored his beliefs.

    • Rob Says:

Bob, you obviously have never read a thing Rushdoony has written, or you would never say such an ignorant thing.

  4. David Says:

Hello? Doug Phillips comes from a Jewish background. Did you not realize that you wrote that?

  5. Jack Says:

    —Hate Mongering, Slavery, and Racism—
The White race, most especially White Males, are the most victimized group of Racism by all Other Races in the United States. This is a Fact that can’t begin to be argued. The White Race is the Only Race that the Federal and State Governments discriminate against. That is a Fact!

Let me think here, where could I get such Ideas? Let’s start with Federal and State legislation such as the Equal Opportunity Employment Act and Affirmative Action. Did the EOEA not provide provisions against racism? Yes it did! So why did we have to then move on to Affirmative Action legislation?

Any law, Federal or State, that condones racial preferences for one (or more) Race over another is Racial Discrimination. Ahhh, but wait, all Races Other than White call it, Equal Opportunity Employment, or worse yet “Affirmative Action”. Our Govt. can dress it up using all sorts of fancy terminology, but no matter what words are used its still Racism. Neither program has worked for the better of any Race but rather made the U.S. the most openly Racist Government in the world among our democratic neighbors. Even more, it has degraded the level of service and competency in both the private government job markets by giving jobs to people based on Color/Race as a First Priority rather than job skills or qualifications.

Walk into any Federal Govt. Branch in Washington DC, Baltimore City, or any Other City Govt. and what Faces do you see? I see Black Faces, or Other Faces, but very few White faces. As a result, our Federal and State Governments have never operated with such inefficiency and incompetence in the past as it does today. Is that because it’s full of Blacks and Other Races other than White? Not at all, it is because the people hired were not qualified to do the job in the first place.

“You people” with your comments insinuate that White people (White Christianity) created Racism and Slavery. Look up the Facts, Slavery was, and still is in some areas of Africa, a commonly practiced institution. Black tribes would take prisoners of other tribes, enslave them, and sell them to the Whites. It wasn’t like you saw in Roots with White mariners tossing nets over Blacks in the Bush. That is laughable if not ridiculous. No, our African American slaves of past were sold to mariners and traders at African ports by Blacks. It was Blacks that enslaved other Blacks and sold them to Whites and Other Races.

  6. Jack Says:

Are the Minorities of the world going to suggest that Whites possess some superior moral judgment over all other races thus making them more responsible and shameful for engaging in slavery or racism? Would that not be the same as suggesting we are higher form of human being in the first place? You can’t have it both ways! Well in most Other countries you can’t, but in America you can have all the rights of a White person and More for no other reason than being Black or Other. Only in America!!!

With the brilliant legislation of EOEA and Affirmative Action we have convinced the minorities of this country that they are entitled something more than the majority simply because they are Black or Other. It has to be a real slap in the face to the self reliant individual minority to even suspect that the job they now have most likely was awarded to them not for their hard work, achievements, and qualifications but rather because they are Black or Other. Let’s face it, the only message we send to the minorities of the U.S. with such legislation is that they are not capable of achieving the skills or qualifications for most any job as can Whites without a Crutch, Hand-Out, or Boost from the Government. I would rather have given them 20 acres and a mule, with that Blacks and Other minorities would have been able to retain their self respect.

  8. Silas Says:

Bob Calder, You obviously aren’t qualified to be teaching any subject, let alone History to highschoolers.

  9. rocket rob Says:

Your quotes are out of context, & not referenced as to page and paragraph.

Biblical Law does NOT support “racism” NOR the type of slavery that was practiced all over the world since time began.

God limited slavery to the punishment of thieves, debtors, and property damage when the criminal was not able to pay back what was owed – And was limited to 7 years. When the slave had paid in full or the 7 years were up, he was free and the owner was required to provide him, financially, with enough to start his life over.

It was never based on race. The history of Europe and America is filled with examples of slaves of every race, & slave holders of every race. Many slave holders were Black, and many slaves were white – Scots, Germans, Italians, Irish, etc… Some call it “indentured servant-hood”.

Most slavery was unbiblical: owners mistreated them, and refused to release them after 7 years.

The Muslims invented capturing & trafficking Negroes as slaves, & sold them to Englishmen & Americans.

  10. Bob Calder Says:

Silas, Rob, and Rocket Rob: The subject is Rushdooney and the way radical right Calvinists adjust historic records to fit their outrageous prejudices.

Not that theology is a provable social good by any means. Today, we humans build on knowledge discovered and measured. We have been doing so for about four hundred years. We shouldn’t worship anything. Don’t you think Ben Franklin would approve? He founded the AAAS.

Silas: I read up on Jared Taylor. His thoughts on biology and inherited intelligence are so far out of date, they are laughable. He belongs at the Heritage Institute with Murray. There are conservatively about a thousand times the number of researchers (versus Fox News commentators) who agree with The Mismeasure of Man’s argument against the Bell Curve authors whose careers were ruined by their intemperate blather.

  11. Vichy Says:

Sources or it didn’t happen. Don’t just assert shit. I don’t care if Rushdooney was racist (I’m not a Christian or white), but you can’t just say he said something and provide no quotes or links, faggot.

    • Bob Calder Says:

Vichy – What assertions are you challenging? I can’t imagine you feel strongly enough about this without being both white and X-tian since you listen to Enigma too. ;p

  12. Diogenes Says:

I also would look sources for the Rushdoony quotes, including page numbers, for the quote on “selective breeding.”

This lack of sourcing does make me wonder about authenticity. I can’t double-check without page numbers.

    • Rob Says:

Diogenes, “Institutes” page 256,257 – is the only quote I can find…

It is unfortunate he wrote “inter-racial” but given the context I see no evidence of racism.
The bit about “selective breeding” is a deliberate false statement – *not* written by Rushdoony. This is slanderous.

      • Diogenes Says:

You’re quite wrong about that eugenics quote, because I later went to the library and looked it up. The second “selective breeding” quote is in fact in “Institutes”, page 372: “…progressive elimination of many defective persons…” So Loony Rushdoony is clearly pro-eugenics.

You should refrain from disseminating false information. Rushdoony was racist and pro-eugenics. I can read plain English.

I scanned “Institutes”, also “Foundations of Social Order.” The racist quote about “spicks… kikes” etc. is actually in there. He was racist. Does anyone really dispute this?

The first “selective breeding” quote, about the White Man, I could not find, so I agree it’s unreliable for now, but I’ll scan “Institutes” some more.

  13. Louis DeCaro Jr. Says:

Excellent work you’re doing on this blog–but I’d appreciate citations of sources.

    • Bob Calder Says:

This isn’t stuff that is at all hard to find. The problem is not that it exists. The problem is that it is broadcast as gospel on AM Christian talk radio in Southern states. Researching this is very arduous. But you could look at the gross revenues of companies that write it and deduce broadcast coverage. Coral Ridge Ministries Media grosses just under 15 million dollars a year for instance for creating audio and video content, some of which is generic and some of which is distinctly batty.

      • Louis DeCaro Jr. Says:

I believe you; but material that lacks documentation–specific citation–leaves one’s work open to needless criticism and suspicion and also cannot serve as a trustworthy source for those who might want to use your blog as a source.

      • Bob Calder Says:

That would assume it *is* my blog. Which it isn’t.

I pointed out that the material is basically open to everybody and easy to find. People just aren’t willing to admit parallel social evolution happens. Muslims have their fundamentalists and we have ours. Quite a few people call it the American Taliban.

Nobody should use a blog like this for documentation. It only points you in the right direction. Now you can find primary sources you didn’t know about. Be happy.

  14. Rob Says:

If I ask that the so-called “holocaust” be verified with real documentation and facts, would you call me a “deny-er” too?

That was Rushdoony’s point – that there has been no verification of numbers. Especially 6 million. That is the number chosen by the Kabalists to fit their occultic requirement to “re-occupy the land” under British Zionism.
His point was that it is sin to condemn an entire nation for actions of a few and on flimsy evidence – NOT that condemning them is worse than the crime.
And yes he was correct to say that there are very few real Jews… since no-one after 70 AD can verify their ancestry, and they were inter married over centuries. Duh

    • Bob Calder Says:

Rob, most historians would say you have a naive idea of what the historian’s occupation is. The fact you are vulnerable to Rushdoony’s worldview is proof enough without you repeating those discredited arguments.

    • Diogenes Says:

You’re amazing. You tell us that a REAL quote “selective breeding” from racist pro-eugenics Rushdoony is not real, and you call this lie, which you made up, “Slander.”

Then you turn around and say the Holocaust never happened? Wow. You’re one to accuse others of “slander”!

You can’t weasel out by asking that the Holocaust to be “verified with real documentation and facts”, because that “question” falsely implies it hasn’t been.

You should read “Denying History” by Michael Shermer, he demolishes the shoddy logic of denialists.

You write: “That was Rushdoony’s point – that there has been no verification of numbers. Especially 6 million. That is the number chosen by the Kabalists to fit their occultic requirement to “re-occupy the land” under British Zionism.”

That is not evidence that the 6 million number is false! What does the Kabala have to do with it? The Kabala is full of all sorts of crazy numbers: anybody can pick out any number they like. That’s not evidence– you’re doing psychoanalysis!

Raul Hilberg dug up documentation and analysis and came out with slightly over 5 million, other historians since then have pushed it up a bit. Rushdoony was way, way off.

You do not understand what it means to support a thesis with evidence. What you’re doing is psychoanalysis of the Jews– you know how they “really think.” Right!

      • Emily Says:

In respect to the Holocaust, Rushdoony was saying not that it didn’t happen, but that the numbers were bloated. The reason for this, he points out, is that human life is meaningless to people, and that one death, two deaths, 1,000 deaths can easily be overlooked. To make the horror more real, people inflated the numbers. Our culture today is not much different than it was 60 years ago; cultures were already desensitized toward the taking of human life.

Also, please read in context. This is a book about the Ten Commandments not the Holocaust. His subject is false witness not Nazi Germany, hence he is attacking lying and the reasons behind it.

Please check facts before you are led by someone taking arguments out of context.

  15. Getreal Says:

Religion is a joke. All this fighting over something not one of you can prove. All because unconsciously your afraid to die. Damn pansies. There may have been a creator but he would want nothing to do with you racist fucks.

  16. Emily Says:

Rev. Dr. Rushdoony was no racist. He even officiated at least one inter-racial marriage that I know of. His book was published not long after American wars where white men were coming home with Asian wives and entering into marriages that often fell apart due to completely different backgrounds and ethics. This is what he is highlighting in Biblical Law; this is what is known as unequal yoking. It doesn’t mean a white person cannot marry someone with African, Asian, Middle Eastern, etc. ancestry, but to marry someone from a different culture and belief system can only be an extra burden to place on marriage.

    • Louis DeCaro Jr. Says:

It is an old stand by argument that “interracial” marriages cannot last because of the “extra burden.” But this is itself a racist conception. The “burden”–if there is any–exists in a society predominated by a majority of whites who frown upon it and create the societal prejudices in their negative responses, both flagrant and not so flagrant, and in the attitudes they inculcate in their children to see “interracial” marriages as strange and unacceptable. There is no notion of unequal yoking in Scripture that pertains to so-called race, ethnic, tribal, or cultural intermarriages. The only unequal yoking that stands up in Scripture is between believers and nonbelievers. Sorry, but there’s plenty of reason, given Rushdoony’s expressed political and social views, that he blended his Reformed perspective with racist ideology. You cannot win this argument. Rushdoony cannot be defended and history has already shown him to be on the wrong side of things, and that includes the biblically sound view of humanity in terms of “race.”

  17. David Says:

    I agree with Emily.

  18. Louis DeCaro Jr. Says:

And Bob Calder, I am happy thank you. But if a blog cannot be relied on for research, how can it point you in the right direction. That’s what bibliographies and citations are for. If I don’t know the source of what is written–it it’s not even passingly referenced, then how can it point to anything?
